Do you have a spouse over the age of 66 taking social security?
Were you born on Jan 1, 1954 or prior and have not started, or just started, taking social security?
Restricted Application Social Security Strategy Is on Its Way Out
This strategy allows an individual to file a restricted application on their record and receive 50% of their spouse’s current benefit. It is important to note that this does not affect their spouses benefit whatsoever. By utilizing this strategy one can receive 50% of their spouse’s social security benefit while letting their own retirement benefit grow by 8% per/year until age 70.
Important Points:
- The filer (the one filing the restricted benefit) must be of full retirement age.
- The spouse must be of full retirement age and taking social security.
- The filer can get 50% of their spouse’s benefits and let their benefits grow by 8% per year compounded until age 70 then switch to their own benefits.
- Ex-spouses can take advantage of this too as long as they have been divorced for over 2 years, were married for at least 10 years, have not remarried and are 62 years or older.
